Why did you choose to specialize in gastroenterology?

I was drawn to the field of gastroenterology because I liked the approach of combining both clinical medicine with surgical principles.听 Having the ability to solve both simple and complex problems through history taking, employing a variety of diagnostic testing and therapeutic procedures, counseling and use medications is extremely rewarding.听 The chronic nature of many GI diseases allows for the opportunity to develop long lasting relationships with patients and their families. 听听In addition, the practice of Gastroenterology affords me the opportunity to prevent many serious GI diseases through the performance of highly effective screening tests.

Both my father and his parents served as my early mentors in medicine. I am proud to continue the tradition of the practice of medicine into the 21st Century in nearly the same location it began in 1945. My studies in medicine led to me Israel, where I attended Tel-Aviv University.听 Studying in one of the world鈥檚 most exciting and interesting cities, both socially and culturally and arguably one of the world鈥檚 leading countries in Science and Technology, helped prepare me for the sound practice of medicine in our diverse community here in Brooklyn and all of New York.

What are your areas of special interest and expertise within gastroenterology?

My clinical and research interests in Gastroenterology and Endoscopy include Colorectal Cancer Prevention, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), Celiac Disease, Disorders of Gut-Brain interactions, Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR) and endoscopic evaluation of the small intestine.

Do you have any special honors, recognition, or achievements in your medical career that you would like to share?

Since Medical School, the focus of my research has been on Small Bowel Capsule Endoscopy. In 2006, I received the Young Investigators Award from Given Imaging for work on the use of Small Bowel Capsule Endoscopy in the diagnosis of IBD. I published several peer review journal articles and texts and have lectured locally and nationally on the topic. Recently, I also helped develop National Guidelines and Quality Initiatives on the use of Small Bowel Capsule Endoscopy and Enteroscopy. Chief Fellow, Gastroenterology, SUNY Downstate, 2007-2008

What do you and your family enjoy doing during your spare time?

As a family, we enjoy traveling and try to introduce our children to new places, cultures, and cuisine. We enjoy the outdoors, skiing, snowboarding, and boating.听 In my spare time, a tennis court or the Long Island Sound is where you will find me.
