Infrared coagulation (IRC) is an FDA-approved, non-surgical treatment for internal hemorrhoids.聽 IRC involves placing a small probe that emits infrared light against the hemorrhoid tissue.聽 It induces localized coagulation (clotting), which leads to scar formation and thereby shrinks or eliminates the hemorrhoidal tissue.

- IRC is performed in the office without anesthesia.
- You'll lie on your left side as the gastroenterologist inserts the IRC probe through an anoscope into your rectum to apply infrared light to the hemorrhoid columns.
- It is a brief procedure, usually with minimal or no post-procedure discomfort.
There is no special preparation for an IRC procedure.
Most patients feel no discomfort afterward and resume normal activities right away.
